Fisher says preliminary work on staging the elections began some time ago and the office is focusing on refining its plans.

Director of Elections Orrette Fisher says the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) is awaiting funding to step up its election activities for the three by-elections.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced yesterday that Nomination Day for the three constituencies will be on October 9 with voters going to the polls on October 30.

There are currently vacant parliamentary seats in St Mary South East, South St Andrew and South West St Andrew.

The EOJ has submitted a budget of $80 million to the government to stage the three elections.

Fisher says the office needs at least between 30 and 40 per cent of the amount to accelerate election activities.
