The People's National Party has shot down arguments that Dr Shane Alexis is not committed to Jamaica and the people of South East St Mary.

The party says while he was born in Canada, his roots are in Jamaica as he was raised and schooled in the country.

The party further says Alexis has spent his professional life serving the people of Jamaica having worked in several public medical institutions, including doing training and work at the Kingston Public Hospital, Annotto Bay and Bustamante Children's hospitals.

The PNP also points out that Alexis has served as president of the Jamaica Medical Doctors’ Association and was appointed to the board of the National Health Fund by the present JLP administration.

The party says remarks made by government MP Audley Shaw about Alexis is nothing more than despicable scare-mongering.

According to the PNP, Shaw is engaging in a desperate attempt to distract the voters.

The party says Shaw knows very well that there are members of his own party currently sitting in Parliament who also hold Commonwealth citizenship.

It further says he should also be aware that former JLP leader and former Prime Minister, Edward Seaga, was not born in Jamaica.
