Holness cautioned that social housing did not mean that the government will be building and giving away houses.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the government will place more focus on providing social housing.

However, Holness cautioned that social housing did not mean that the government will be building and giving away houses.

He says providing social housing means the government will be working with communities and potential homeowners to devise affordable strategies towards home ownership.

The Prime Minister made the announcement while delivering a keynote address at the Housing Agency of Jamaica’s (HAJ) ground-breaking ceremony for the Luana Housing Development in St Elizabeth on Wednesday.

Holness says social housing will also assist efforts to reduce the problem of squatting across the island.

He explains that the strategy at this point is to ensure that government agencies use public resources in such a way that there are more opportunities for people to own their homes.

Meanwhile, the prime minister says the roles of the National Housing Trust (NHT) and the Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) are to be clearly defined.

The NHT is expected to start over 5,000 housing solutions this fiscal year; while the HAJ will provide approximately 168 solutions with another 500 to come in the next fiscal year.
