National Security Minister Robert Montague says the police have seen a significant increase in the recovery of illegal guns and ammunition.

Speaking at a press conference this morning where the second special zone of operation was announced, Montague informed that 674 guns have been seized so far this year.

This compares to 499 for the same period last year, representing an increase of 36 per cent.

Montague noted that seven of the guns were recovered in the first special zone in Mount Salem, St James.

The national security minister said the seizure of ammunition has more than doubled.

Montague said the recovery of ammunition jumped from 7,238 last year to 15,667 in 2017.

The minister urged Jamaicans to utilise the government's rewards programmes for illegal gun and the apprehension of fugitives.
