​Commish condemns killing of Manchester cop

Commissioner of Police George Quallo has condemned the killing of  Corporal Melvin Smith, who was assigned to the Community Safety and Security Branch (CSSB) in Manchester.

Quallo says “It is unfortunate that while performing his duty to serve, protect and reassure, Corporal Smith was met with such cruelty and callousness,” the Commissioner said.

The Commissioner has extended his condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Corporal Smith.

Commissioner Quallo says “No effort will be spared in bringing his killer/s to justice. Corporal Smith was an exemplary officer who gave the ultimate sacrifice as he served his fellow citizens. In honour of his memory, let us show some empathy for his family and the members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), particularly, the Manchester Division that mourn at this time”.

The commissioner is encouraging all members of the JCF to remain vigilant.

He also noted that an attack on any law enforcement officer is an attack very foundation of the security of our nation.

Quallo says as a nation we must bond together to preserve the rule of law, the safety, security and human rights of every Jamaican.

Corporal Smith was shot dead about 8 p.m. on Manchester Road, Manchester while assisting a citizen who was robbed of his motorcycle.

The robbery victim was also shot and injured during the attack.

He remains hospitalised in stable condition.
