A daring theft of a motorcar on Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston this morning ended in one of the alleged robbers being shot dead by the police and one held in custody, while two other men escaped.

The incident unfolded in dramatic fashion, when the St Andrew South police responded to a call that a motorist was robbed of his vehicle.

In their attempt to evade the police the robbers crashed the car into the median at Portia Simpson Miller Square and the four alighted with guns blazing.

The gunfire was returned by the cops and one of the men was shot. Two of the gunmen managed to flee the scene and the other was held.

In custody is a 17-year-old from a Red Hills address. His name is being withheld pending further investigations, while the dead man remains unidentified.

The police are warning motorists to take extra precaution when travelling late at nights by keeping doors locked and to steer clear of suspicious looking people and dark roadways.

The St Andrew South police and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) have launched investigations into the incident.
