Car thief killed by police after dramatic chase
A 17-year-old youth remained in custody yesterday after the theft of a motor car had a dramatic end with one of his three cronies shot dead by the police early Sunday morning.
The dead man remained unidentified up to yesterday, while the name of the teen, who has a Red Hills address, was being withheld pending further investigations.
The incident unfolded when police personnel from the St Andrew South Police Division responded to a call minutes after 2 a.m. They were told that men armed with guns had stolen a car along Marcus Garvey Drive.
The robbers' trail was picked up and the police accosted them near Portia Simpson Miller Square when, in their attempt to evade the police, the driver lost control of the car, a white Nissan Wingroad, which crashed into a median.
The four men allegedly got out of the vehicle brandishing handguns and opened fire at the police, who returned fire, hitting one of them. He died on the spot, while two of his fellow attackers managed to escape. The teen was held by the police.
