Gov't to undertake comprehensive rehabilitation programme – McKenzie

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie says the Government will be undertaking a comprehensive rehabilitation programme to significantly tackle parochial roads that are in disrepair across the country.

McKenzie says local authorities and the local government ministry have responsibility for 22,000 kilometres of roadway.

Addressing a property tax town hall meeting in Westmoreland on Wednesday, he said he has taken note of the recent protests in sections of the island calling for better roads.

The local government minister says while the government respects the right of citizens to demonstrate, some of these actions have impacted the condition of the roads being complained about.

McKenzie cites the burning of tyres and other debris.

He urges residents to be responsible in their action.
