Tempers flared in the meeting of the St Thomas Municipal Corporation today after a representative of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) revealed that garbage had not been collected in some areas because of the poor state of the roads.

The announcement was made after councillor for the Cedar Valley Division Marsha Francis enquired about the pile up of rubbish in her division.

Francis says she is disheartened and is calling on the intervention of the mayor.

Mayor of Morant Bay, Lenworth Rawle gave a commitment to write a letter to the authorities seeking a temporary solution to the problem.

Residents of St Thomas this week staged a two-day mass protest expressing their frustration with the condition of the parish's main roads.

The residents, who mounted roadblocks all over the parish, say patching work being carried out by the National Works Agency is inadequate.
