Alleged cop killer charged

Mandeville, Manchester:
The Manchester police last night charged one man in connection with the Friday October 27 murder of Corporal Melvin Smith in Mandeville. 

Twenty-two-year-old Kemar Bennett otherwise known as ‘Sparta’, of Settlement, Williamsfield was charged with the murder of Smith, three counts of robbery with aggravation and one count of shooting with intent, after he was pointed out during an identification parade.

Bennett is to face another ID parade for a second murder.

According to head of the Manchester police, Superintendent Wayne Cameron, Bennett is also being investigated for another robbery that took place in the parish. 

Cameron said the police are continuing their search for another man believed involved in the murder of the police corporal.

Smith, who was attached to the Community Safety and Security branch, was attempting to foil a robbery along Manchester Road when he was he was shot in the upper body.

He returned fire and his attackers fled the scene.  Smith was taken to the Mandeville Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
