The Bureau of Standards Jamaica has handed over 900 standards geared towards protecting the safety of children at play and providing guidance for socially acceptable behaviour to the Ministry of Education (MOE), Youth and Information.

The standards were handed over to portfolio Minister, Senator Ruel Reid by Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Karl Samuda on Wednesday.

They include 300 sets of the Jamaican Standard Specifications for the Safety and Performance of Football Goals and 300 sets of Jamaican Standard Specifications for Children’s playground and associated equipment.

The standards were developed following the death of three children in 2011 from injuries sustained from falling goalposts.

An order was subsequently issued by the Ministry of Education for the immediate removal of all unanchored goal posts from public infant and primary schools during that year.

The Education Minister also received 300 sets of the Jamaican Standard Guide for Public Behaviour.

The standards will be distributed to schools islandwide.
