The government has announced plans to erect a special monument to honour police men and women who die in the line of duty.

Minister of National Security Robert Montague says funding for the project has already been identified within his ministry.

Montague says the ministry has placed an order for a hearse that is befitting of the fallen men and women of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

The announcement comes almost one month after Corporal Melvin Smith was shot and killed in the Mandeville town centre by a man he was attempting to apprehend for stealing a motorcycle.

The national security minister says two designs have already been received for the monument and members of the JCF have been asked to submit their designs or suggest ways to enhance those being considered.

He was speaking at the ministry’s inaugural awards ceremony for members of the JCF in St Andrew on Thursday.
