Upgrade, modernisation of court system moving apace
Measures to upgrade and modernise the country's court system are moving apace.
That is according to the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Carol Palmer, who says some 310 million dollars in contracts have been signed to carry out various improvements to the ailing court system.
Speaking this afternoon at the installation of 135 new Justices of the Peace in Kingston, Mrs Palmer said the contracts are at varying stages of execution.
She says the contracts provide for the supply of and installation of air conditioning units, refurbishing works at a number of courts, the provision of computer and electrical supplies to the courts and refurbishing works to expand the Corporate Area Traffic Court.
The Justice Ministry official says this is part of a wider effort to improve Jamaica's criminal justice system to deal with the increase in crime in the country.
