Today's Briefing is a tribute to the late Professor Claude Packer.

The members of the Department of Economics, University of the West Indies, Mona campus, pay tribute to the late Professor Claude Packer, former head of the department.

Professor Packer joined the Department of Economics as a lecturer in mathematics and served as head of department from the 1991-1992 academic year to 1994-1995 academic year.

Professor Packer is remembered as a visionary leader and an outstanding educator who was committed to promoting the development of Jamaica. As head of the Department of Economics, he inspired his colleagues and students to pursue excellence. After leaving the Department of Economics, he was appointed president of MICO College and led the transformation from college to university.

His passion for the teaching of mathematics was well known. His contribution to the teaching of mathematics extended beyond the University of the West Indies to other institutions needing his assistance.

Professor Packer was more than an outstanding leader and educator. He was a humane person with a very generous spirit. He was always willing to share his knowledge with others and was happy to help others succeed. He was a quiet, loyal giant who made his contribution without fanfare.

The Department of Economics mourns the loss of an extraordinary man.

The Department of Economics expresses its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. May his soul rest in peace.
