Chief Justice to retire 2018, Chuck dismisses suggestions gov't seeking to make political appointment

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says no decision has yet been made regarding a replacement for current Chief Justice Zaila McCalla, who is set to retire next year.

He told Nationwide News Network yesterday evening that the Prime Minister is still having consultations on the matter.

Chuck was also quick to dismiss suggestions that the government was looking to appoint someone from the political directorate.

Meanwhile, he has described as dangerous a suggestion by the Jamaican Bar Association that the post should be advertised to ensure transparency.

He said he would not advise the Prime Minister to do so as it would be unconstitutional, and deny the prime minister the opportunity to appoint qualified persons who had not applied for the post.

Chuck also argued that the proposal to change the appointment system in the Constitution was made years ago and the People’s National Party administration ignored it.

He said he hopes this is the last Chief Justice to be appointed under the current system.
