Prime Minister Andrew Holnes has indicated that it is likely that the zone of special operation (ZOSO) in Denham Town, Kingston, will be extended.

The west Kingston community was declared a ZOSO on October 17, amid concern about ongoing gang warfare in the area.

It is expected to last 60 days and will require the Parliament’s approval to have it extended.

During yesterday’s OPM Live youth forum in St Andrew one participant noted that examples of similar measures which have worked in other countries involved years of the security forces remaining in violence-prone communities.

Holness responded that he did not intend ZOSO to be a short-term measure, despite the 60-day timeline.

The government has already extended the first ZOSO, which was declared in Mount Salem, St James, on September 1.

That zone of special operation was extended for another 60 day.
