Diary of the Ghetto Priest | On Fire with Christ!

Published:Friday | December 1, 2017 | 12:00 AM

Jamaica! Jamaica! Don't lose your fire. Don't lose your passion for life, and your passion for Christ. Christ is life, right here on Earth, Satan is death and death right here. Jamaicans are a lively people. We smile, we laugh, we cry, we love, we pour out ourselves in service of one another. But sometimes we are too soft and easy-going.

Don't be a people who live by the passion of the flesh. Live by the passion of the Spirit. The passion of the flesh means death to our spirit. We can also be a tough people, we can endure all kinds of trials.

Don't sell out your passion of the spirit for the passion of your flesh. Don't live out a life of liberty as though it is a life of freedom. "For you, brothers and sisters, have been called into liberty: only make not liberty an occasion to the flesh, but by clarity of Spirit, serve one another" (Gal. 5:13).

We are living in a time when everybody wants to be free to do whatever they want. For instance, transgender operations are a matter of course in Canada, and it is also happening in Europe and America.

Pro-choice means, I choose what I want to be, I choose what I want to do. Freedom! To do what I want to do or to do what I please. It is not freedom but slavery to sin.

Announce it! Tell it! Proclaim it! Jesus is the truth. There is right, there is wrong. We must exercise freedom by choosing what is right and rejecting what is wrong - this is true freedom! Jesus is our Lord and Saviour. He proclaims by His life, what He says and what He does, what must be, if we are to be perfect. Proclaim that Christ, who is so wonderful and deeply embedded in the life of Jamaica, is our way of life.

Christianity is under attack internationally! God is under attack by liberals and lawless people. All I know is that Jesus is "the way, the truth and the life!" It is a narrow road. It is the true way of life, and, at the end of the road, there is true freedom.

In Jamaica, we know that self-control, the control that Jesus shows on the cross, is what we must have to obtain true freedom. Obedience to God is freedom! Obedience to Christ, His words, His works, His way of life is freedom!

Mother locked up for forbidding daughter to be a boy

Sacrifice, freedom from that fleshy passion, a life of prayer, a concern for others, a concern for our salvation and the salvation of other, is freedom.

We don't want to be like some advanced countries. For instance, a Canadian woman came to visit our missions. "Father, it is so good to be free in Jamaica, and be on your missions for the poor. Here you can say there is the right and there is the wrong. Here you can practise charity without worrying that the law will stop you from helping those in the streets."

"I have a girl, 13 years old. Her friend asked her for advice. 'I feel like a boy, I don't feel like a girl. My mother is angry, she forbids me to be a boy. What can I do?' I told her she is a girl. She isn't a boy. She has feelings, she must control them.

"She says she has told her counsellor at school the situation. Now, the mother is locked up in jail. 'She would not sign the agreement to allow me to be a boy. I didn't want my mother to be locked up in jail but it is my right, and my counsellor told me to do that, otherwise I would not be exercising my personal right and freedom. Now I am sad, I don't know what to do'.

"You must tell the truth, but if you tell the truth, you, too, might be locked up.

"Father, there is no truth. Actually, there is no freedom in Canada. There is more freedom in Jamaica. You can't say anything that you want. It is a hate crime if you speak up about abortion, suicide, euthanasia, same-sex marriages! The rights of people require that you do not say what is right and what is wrong. Everybody says and does whatever they want to say and do."

My friends, love of God unto death, the proclamation of His words and His way of life is freedom. Love of our neighbours, especially the poor ones, is freedom. And all the time, living, loving, laughing, working, sharing and caring is freedom.

As for the wealthy and advanced and progressive nations, freedom often means slackness rather than love for one another, especially the forgotten ones.

Actually, they are slaves of the flesh! They want everything for themselves and take everything for themselves.

Bound by debt! Bound by the rich countries, we are being enslaved. But we must be free men "We have grown into union with Him a death like His, we shall also be united with Him in the resurrection."(Rom. 6:5).
