God showed up for me, pastor testifies
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runneth into it and are safe." Proverbs 18:10
It was the last night of a successful two-week crusade, where Pastor Jovan Whyte of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church had delivered his most powerful sermon yet.
Reminiscing on the evening's proceedings, which included baptisms and testimonies of renewal, he happily headed home, thanking God for using him.
Unbeknown to Whyte, a test of his faith awaited him at his gate.
"When I got [there], it was later than usual, so my neighbours were asleep. The street light on my lane was off, for some strange reason, so I kept my car lights on as I came out and opened the gate.
"Upon returning to my car, a man came from behind an old house and shoved me against my car door, which closed, with my car keys still in the ignition," he said.
Whyte recalled that the stranger proceeded to put a gun to his head and demanded that he give up his laptop, which he was holding. A second man who had appeared, requested that he give up his car keys as well.
The minister told Family and Religion that both men threatened to kill him that night, with one saying: 'You going to dead today, Pastor Boy'. But while they planned, God wiped.
"All I could say was, 'Jesus, save me!' As my heart raced and I closed my eyes, the one who had the gun to my head laughed and pulled the trigger, but it clicked and no bullet came out. The other came near with his gun to try, but at that point, I opened my eyes and remembered tt, that very night I had preached that there is Power in the Name of Jesus.
"This boosted my faith and confidence to shout 'The Blood of Jesus is against you!' and his gun also jammed.
"At this point, because of the shouting, my neighbours were alerted and cried out murder! This shocked the gunmen and they ran off into the bushes shouting, 'You working obeah, Pastor'," he said, adding that though he was shaken up by the experience, he kept thanking Jesus.
NOWEAPON FORMEDAGAINST HIM ...
Now a living testimony that no weapons formed against him shall prosper, Whyte, who pastors the Hope District of Churches, is reassuring others that it is amazing what faith in God can do.
"Today you may be going through struggles, encountering life's pressuring perplexities, but I challenge you put your faith in God. I truly believe He is a God of the impossible, and can do all things.
"When you can see not one, but two guns jam and no bullets coming out, then truly this couldn't be by accident there must have been angels encamping around me that night. God kept me safe and delivered me from those gunmen because there is purpose on my life. Today I'm not only a pastor and counsellor, but I also am an upcoming artiste spreading the gospel through songs that have other testimonies of how God showed up for me. The same God that showed up right on time for me that night can be the same God that will see you through test and trials," he said.
