The police say the Chinese woman who was seen on a viral video slapping a 13-year-old student in a grocery store was freed this week because no evidence was offered against her when she appeared in court.

The woman, identified as 53-year-old Yuemei Pan, was arrested and charged on December 7, the same day of the incident.

She was charged with Assault Occasioning Bodily Harm.

But the police say when the matter was brought before the Trelawny Parish Court on Tuesday, no evidence was offered against her.

The police say about 12:45 on the afternoon of December 7, the teen went into the store operated by Pan, picked up an item to purchase and went to the counter.

Pan then grabbed the teen and proceeded to slap her in the face while accusing her of stealing.

A report was subsequently made to the Police and Pan was arrested and charged.

A video of the incident surfaced online this week, sparking outrage and calls for the store operator’s arrest.
