Kern blames increase of illegal guns for upsurge in crime
Former Member of Parliament Kern Spencer is decrying the proliferation of illegal guns across the country.
Spencer says this is responsible for an upsurge in crimes in the usually quiet rural community of Balaclava in St Elizabeth.
The former politician says any crime plan devised by the government should focus on stemming the flow of guns as too many are in the hands of idle persons.
Spencer's comments follow a gun attack on his father last night at his home in the community.
His 70-year-old father, Daniel Spencer, sustained minor injuries after he was pounced on by three armed men as he returned home about 8:30.
He says there has been an increase in break-ins and robberies of businesses in the rural community in recent times.
Residents say the number of police personnel at the Balaclava police station needs to be increased.
They say the increase in crimes in the area requires a stronger police presence.
