Opposition spokesman on National Security, Fitz Jackson, says the pending departure of Police Commissioner George Quallo, has come at a bad time.

Quallo will proceed on pre-retirement leave starting Wednesday, January 31.

Jackson says although he is not surprised, the news has come while a State of Public Emergency is in effect in the western parish of St James.

He says he hopes there will be some stability, so that the country’s security can be attended to in a serious and focused way.

There has been tension between the police commissioner and the National Security Minister Robert Montague, as pressure mounts over the state of the country's crime.

More than 100 people have been killed across the country since the start of the year, as Jamaica follows on its near record murder toll of more than 1,600 last year.
