NIDS secretariat wants review of clause in proposed Data Protection Act
The Secretariat of the National Identification System (NIDS) wants the clause in the proposed Data Protection Act which gives the Minister of National Security the power to restrict the release of certain information to be removed.
Head of the Secretariat, Jacqueline Lynch Stewart, made the call yesterday at a meeting of the Joint Select Committee reviewing the bill.
Lynch Stewart argued that the powers of the Minister to exempt personal data from the reach of the proposed Information Commissioner should be reviewed.
She said nothing must be done to unravel the protections given to citizens when the National Identification System Authority was established.
She said several commitments were given during the many consultations and nothing should be done to breach that trust.
The authority will be tasked with providing Jamaicans with a national identification number and card.
The national ID will be new to Jamaica and the pilot enrolment is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2019.
