The government has confirmed that Justice Bryan Sykes is to act as Chief Justice, starting tomorrow.

Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte announced this morning that Prime Minister Andrew Holness has advised Governor General Sir Patrick Allen to make the appointment.

Speaking during a special sitting of the Supreme Court to honour retiring Chief Justice Zaila McCalla, Malahoo Forte says Justice Sykes is to serve in the position until further advised.

The announcement was greeted with loud applause from members of the legal fraternity who were in attendance.

McCalla, who was the first female appointed to lead the Jamaican judiciary, demits office today after 10 years in the post.
