Five more sentence reduction days coming

Published:Friday | February 2, 2018 | 4:15 PM

Accused persons in the parishes of St Ann, St Elizabeth, St James and St Thomas will get to benefit from reduced sentences if they plead guilty.

Sentence Reduction Days have been announced for these parishes starting this month.

The first such day will be next Friday, February 9, in the St Ann Circuit Court followed by the Elizabeth Circuit Court, which will have its sentence reduction day on Friday, March 9.

The St James and St Thomas Circuit courts and the Western Regional Gun court will host their sentence reduction day on Friday, March 16.

Sentence Reduction Days allows accused persons to plead guilty and become eligible for up to a 50 per cent discount on their punishment.

The initiative has faced criticisms from persons within the society because of the reduced sentences.

However, former Chief Justice, Zaila McCalla, and Paula Llewellyn, the director of public prosecutions, have defended the sentence reduction days.
