Opposition calls press conference on chief justice furore

The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) has called a press conference for this afternoon to make further pronouncements on the temporary appointment of the new chief justice.

The press conference is scheduled for the Office of the Opposition Leader beginning at 12:30.

The PNP, through its spokesperson on Justice Donna Scott-Motley, has already said it doesn't approve of the temporary appointment of the new chief justice.

The Opposition party says this does not guarantee the independence of the Judiciary from the Executive arm of Government as prescribed by the Constitution.

It says the suggestion that the new chief justice will have to prove himself to the prime minister before he is appointed undermines this principle.
