The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) is expressing surprise that the Director of Elections was not consulted before the announcement of the by-elections by Prime Minister Andrew Holness last night.

Director of Elections Orrette Fisher told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre last night that he was surprised at the announcement of the by-election date for the constituency of St Andrew North Western and the Norman Gardens Division in East Kingston.

Fisher said he was not consulted as is customary regarding the readiness of the electoral machinery.

He said while the move is unprecedented for him, it is not a required by law.

However, reacting to the revelation this morning, PNP Chairman Fitz Jackson said the move is unusual given the importance of the EOJ to the smooth execution of an election.
