Golden Grove cane cutters still off the job

Over 400 cane cutters contracted at the Golden Grove Sugar Factory in St Thomas are protesting for the third straight day over what they say are poor working conditions.

The workers, who have been off the job since Wednesday, are contracted to Sankar Limited, which has a contract with the sugar factory to undertake field operations.

One cane cutter told our news centre this morning that he has been contracted to the company for nearly three years and according to him over that time the company has not shown any regard for the workers.

According to him, the company has not responded to their pleas for a meeting and that they consider this as a blatant disregard for their feelings and needs.

He claims that cane cutters are being underpaid and are not being provided with any benefits.

He says he and the other workers will not return to work until they are addressed by representatives from Sankar.

The workers were previously employed to the sugar estate but were made redundant more than two years ago.

They subsequently obtained jobs with Sankar.
