Holness ... the objective of the programme is to discourage the use of candles and kerosene lamps which are often responsible for household fires

The Government is taking steps to distribute thousands of solar lamps to poor households.

In his contribution to the Budget Debate in Gordon House Tuesday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the Government has already secured 5,000 solar lamps for distribution.

According to Holness, the Government was not just giving solar lamps to poor households.

He said the objective was to discourage the use of candles and kerosene lamps which are often responsible for household fires.

Since the start of the year, five children have been killed in fires.

However, the prime minister noted that while the solar lamps were important to prevent fires, parents and guardians should play their roles in protecting and ensuring the safety of this children.
