Multiple murder convict Michael McLean, 50, has been sentenced to six life sentences for the 2006 murders of six members of a family in St Thomas.

He is to spend 60 years behind bars before he becomes eligible for parole.

However, given the 12 years already spent in custody, McLean will only serve another 48 years before he becomes eligible for parole.

Justice Bertram Morrison handed down the sentence in the Home Circuit Court in Kingston a short while ago.

He said on each of the first three counts, McLean should serve 20 years in prison, one term after the other before he becomes eligible for parole.

On the other three counts, McLean should also serve 20 years but concurrent to the terms for the first three counts before parole.

That's a total of 120 years, but with some of the sentences running at the same time, McLean would effectively serve 60 years in prison.

"Sad to say hanging is not one of the options I have today," Morrison said shortly after he began his remarks.

"If that were the case I would have no hesitation in making that pronouncement," he  added.

Earlier, a probation officer who spoke with residents in the Red Hills community where McLean lived said the people indicated that the convict should never again see the light of day.

"They said they would be sad if he is given a short sentence," the probation officer said.

She said some residents said he should be hanged.

McLean has been convicted for killing his girlfriend, Terry-Ann Mohammed, her niece, Patrice Martin-McCool and their children, Lloyd McCool, Jihad McCool, Sean Chin and Jesse O'Gilvie in St Thomas in February 2006.

The bodies of five of the victims were found in bushes with their throats slashed.

The body of the sixth victim, 6-year-old Jihad, was found a week later in a shallow grave in St Mary.
