St Catherine chamber president calls for broad-based approach to crime fighting
President of the St Catherine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dennis Robotham, says there needs to be a broad-based approach to crime fighting in the parish.
Robotham said criminals are so well-organised that despite the increase in the security forces, hardly any weapon has been seized.
The Catherine North Police Division is currently under a state of public emergency.
"It is either the gangster are great at concealing, they are more tactful in their movement or the weapons have simply dissapeared," he said.
The St Catherine chamber president said while he commends the efforts of the authorities to tackle extortion, murder and other serious crimes, there needs to be a wider approach.
"There has to be a greater social approach and education and training has to be a key component. There will have to be the targeting of the youth and to work in partnership with the church and other such group to train them," Robotham said.
Meanwhile, Robotham said most business operators were cooperating with the restriction on operating hours by the security forces.
"The emergency operations cannot go on forever, therefore the effort to get the guns must be strengthen and then history will be kind to the efforts of all," Robotham said.
