50 students, teachers rushed to hospital after fire near Garvey Maceo high
The Garvey Maceo High School in Clarendon had to be dismissed early today and about 50 staff and students were rushed to hospital following smoke from a nearby old sugar estate.
Principal Erica Eubanks said most of the affected students had asthma problems.
She said other students were experiencing a burning sensation in their eyes.
The fire started shortly before 10 o'clock in the morning and quickly spreading to within 100 metres of the school forcing dismissal at 11 o'clock.
Eubanks has praised fire fighters from the May Pen Fire Station and the police whom she said responded promptly.
