Man shot in Portland while allegedly attempting to disarm cop

Several businesses including a commercial bank in Port Antonio, Portland were forced to close this morning as the police investigate the shooting of a man who allegedly attempted to disarm one of their colleagues.

The man is in hospital undergoing treatment.

Assistant Superintendent of Police in Port Antonio, Throyville Haughton, told The Gleaner that about 7:00 a.m. a police team was on an operation in the area when the man was allegedly seen with an illegal gun.

Haughton said the man was accosted and the weapon taken from him.

He further said during the process of the arrest a struggle developed between the man and a police personnel during which he allegedly tried to disarm the cop.

During the ordeal, the man was shot and was subsequently taken to hospital.

Haughton said the man was a criminal suspect who was on the police's radar.

He said Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been advised of the shooting.
