Petition launched in TCI to deal with illegal migration
PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and CAICOS Islands, CMC – A petition has been launched in the Turks and Caicos Islands for the authorities to impose stricter measures to prevent Haitian nationals from illegally entering the British Overseas Territory, after nearly 80 people were deported over the last four days.
“We demand that the integrity of our borders be respected by all nations and nationalities and that any attempt to illegally penetrate our borders is condemned by all law-abiding persons in the Turks and Caicos Islands,” said the petition posted on the social media, including Facebook and Twitter.
The Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) authorities confirmed that over the past four days they deported 79 Haitian illegal immigrants after they were detained while attempting to enter the territory by sea.
The authorities said last Saturday, they intercepted a boat with an undetermined number of illegal migrants in the North West Point area, a popular landing site for illegal ships.
Police said that several people were seen leaving the boat and all the illegal migrants managed to escape before the authorities arrived.
“We demand an immediate closure of the Haitian consulate in Providenciales, which we believe is a tool used by illegal migrants in facilitating their efforts at illegal entry and illegal residency,” according to the petition.
