Long Pond assessing damage from distillery fire, 65,000 litres of rum destroyed

Operators of the Long Pond Distillery in Trelawny say they are currently assessing the impact of the damage from a fire at its sugar estate.

In a statement, Long Pond said the fire, which started in cane fields near the distillery on Monday afternoon, quickly spread affecting a part of the fermentation room and the fresh rum stocks.

The company said that approximately 65,000 litres of rum have been destroyed.

Noting that it does not store aged rum at the distillery, the company said its aged rum stock was not affected by the fire.

“We are relieved to announce that nobody was harmed in the fire … and that damage only occurred to production materials and buildings.” Long Pond said.

“The distillery itself including the stills have not been affected.” the company added.

It said the company is working actively toward getting the stills back to normal production schedule.

“In the middle of this difficulty, I know I can count on my team as well as our owners, the Jamaican Government, Maison Ferrand and Demerara Distillers Limited. We are all committed for Long Pond to distill again this one-of-a-kind rum as soon as possible” said Winston Harrison, Chief Executive Officer of National Rums of Jamaica.
