St Elizabeth farmer accused of murder remanded
St Elizabeth farmer Eaton Clarke, who was taken into custody in relations with the fatal shooting of 36-year-old Ruel Russell on August 9 at his home at Cornwall Mountain in the parish, was remanded until October 2 when he appeared in the St Elizabeth Parish Court on Tuesday.
In court, his attorney's application for bail was denied as the prosecution expressed concern about the safety of the witness in the case and argued that if bail was granted the accused would interfere with the investigation which is still ongoing.
Concerns were also expressed that the accused was well-known to the deceased and his family members.
The court was told that about 7:30 on the night in question Russell was at his home with his common-law-wife and children when he went outside to use a bathroom.
He was pounced upon by a gunman who fired a shot in his direction.
Russell ran back inside his house and was chased by the gunman who reportedly kicked opened the door to the premises and fired several other shots which hit him in the face and upper body.
His common-law-wife and children, who were in the house at the time of the attack, were not harmed.
The police were summoned and Russell was rushed to the Black River Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The court was also told that the police recovered 11 spent-shell casings from the scene of the shooting.
Following an investigation, Clarke was taken into custody on August 26 and was identified as the shooter.
Clarke was subsequently charged with murder.
