A St Catherine man who allegedly beat his wife to death with a pickaxe stick and then reportedly attempted to commit suicide is in hospital under police guard.

The deceased has been identified as 43-year-old Maralee Russell-Knight, otherwise called Lisa, of the Bannister Housing Scheme in Old Harbour.

It is reported that the couple had a disagreement at their house about 2 o' clock yesterday afternoon where the husband accused the wife of being unfaithful.

He reportedly used the pickaxe stick to inflict several blows to the woman's head.

She subsequently collapsed.

The husband then reportedly took up a bottle of pesticide and ran into nearby bushes and was chased by relatives.

He allegedly ingested the liquid and fell ill.

The police were summoned and the man rescued and taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was admitted in serious condition.

His wife reportedly succumbed to her injuries.
