Urgent need for cost benefit analysis of bauxite sector -- Frazer-Binns

Opposition Senator Sophia Frazer-Binns says there is an “urgent and pressing” need for a cost benefit analysis of Jamaica’s bauxite sector.

The call was based on what Frazer-Binns described as an informal survey she conducted among residents in bauxite mining communities she visited.

The informal survey, she says, revealed a number of “troubling issues.”

One of the main issue, Frazer-Binns says, is that persons, such as farmers, who were once independent and self-sufficient are becoming increasingly dependent “as their livelihood, by way of farming, are no longer present.”

“We are compelled, as a nation, to consider the environmental impact, the impact on family life, land ownership and just plain and simple acceptable standard of living,” said Frazer-Binns during her contribution to the State of the Nation debate in the Senate yesterday.

Another issue, she said, is the long-standing problem of titling for bauxite lands.

“Amidst the efforts of successive governments, we have failed to deliver successfully in this regard,” the Opposition senator said.

“Still too many families, after many decades, cannot get titles for their properties in these bauxite communities,” she added.
