UPDATE: It imploded...Argentina Navy says of doomed submarine
The Argentine submarine that vanished one year ago with 44 crew members imploded, officials have now confirmed.
The confirmation comes after the Argentine Navy confirmed that the ARA San Juan was located yesterday 2,950 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
The vessel disappeared 270 miles off the Argentine coast last November.
Navy Commander Gabriel Attis said the hull was "totally deformed, collapsed and imploded" and that debris was scattered over an area of about 229 feet.
"It appears to be complete, but it obviously imploded," said Attis.
The wreckage was found by the Seabed Constructor, a ship owned by the United States search firm Ocean Infinity.
The exact cause of the implosion has not yet been established.
