Urban parishes overtake rural divisions in murder tally

Published:Tuesday | July 2, 2019 | 12:00 AM
Some 369 murders were committed in urban parishes from January 1 to June 29, while rural parishes accounted for 306.

In the past six months, metropolitan parishes combined have recorded more murders than rural police divisions.

It is a reversal of what was becoming a trend.

According to the latest statistics released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), of the 675 murders committed since from January 1 to June 29, urban parishes accounted for 369.

There were 306 murders in rural police divisions.

However, collectively, rural divisions saw a five per cent decrease in murders when compared to the similar period last year.

But while there was an overall five per cent decline, Manchester saw a 90 per cent increase in homicides.

The figures show that there has been 19 murders in the parish so far this year, nine more than there was for the first six months of 2018.

Portland, with 6 murders, had the lowest murder tally for the period.
