St Catherine prisoner charged over fatal stabbing of correctional officer

The police have charged an inmate at the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre with the murder of correctional officer Jimel Westney.

Robert Thompson, 31, is also charged with assault at common law and introducing contraband in a penal institution.

Thompson was charged following an interview with his attorney.

His court date is being finalised.

Westney, 32, was stabbed on Friday, November 13, and subsequently succumbed at hospital.

The police report that about 9:15 a.m., Westney and other correctional officers were attending to prisoners when Thompson allegedly used a sharp object to inflict a wound to his back.

The Gleaner was informed that he was stabbed with a makeshift ice pick.

Westney was rushed to hospital where he died.
