Having a baby is, by far, one of the most life-changing experiences for a woman. And preparing for their little bundle of joy's grand entrance into the world can be quite overwhelming, for mothers and fathers alike. So, how about helping mommies to kick-start baby prepping by providing them with a baby box?

The concept originated in Finland, in the 1930s, as a balancing measure for all mothers to give all babies regardless of social class, the same start in life. What exactly is a baby box? Well, think of it as a two-in-one baby gift, since it functions primarily as what we would call a pre-packaged baby bag, as well as a mini crib, so to speak, for the little one.

how it works

Here's how it works: once you are expecting, the Finish government supplies mothers with their start-up kits, filled with toys, clothes, sheets, bath products, nappies, toiletries and other necessities, all on a small mattress. When the baby is born, all that was once stored will be put to good use and the box will become the baby's very first bed.

With many mothers having to choose between the box and cash, the preferred choice is the box because of its high value.

Fast forward to today. How many of us would seek to benefit from having one of these baby boxes? With the trending baby showers now progressing from solely about the mother to including both parents, here is a new and innovative way of getting the parents to be all that they will need to be for their new little one. How would you personalise this baby box for a dear family member or a good friend? What would you put in it?

We asked a few mothers what they would like if they were to receive a baby box, and their answer ranged from the everyday necessities - diapers, socks, bottles, wipes, toys, breast pads, receivers, teething rings, pacifiers, blankets, and chemises. Others opt for choosing unique baby clothes, baby gadgets, and stuffed animals. Some mothers even suggest giving them a personal gift, like a heart-felt card or a gift certificate to the spa, with a foot massage or a manicure and/or a pedicure. I mean, if the mother is relaxed, then so will the child.

So, for this mother's day, think inside of the box and surprise future mother-to-be with a present - a customised baby box she will never forget.
