Family and friends toasted to the long life of Trelawny stalwart Mabel Richards, who celebrated her 80th birthday on Sunday, August 7.

Richards, a former postmistress, was showered with praises at her birthday celebrations, honour at the Holiday Inn Resort at Rose Hall in St James on the weekend.

The mother of 10 children was surrounded by generations of family members which included grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives who reside locally and abroad.

Their numbers, however, was further bolstered by scores of her friends and residents from her home community of Albert Town, who all paid tribute to her service to community and country.

"This celebration is just our way of giving back to her something to remember all the good that she has done," said her eldest daughter, Marlene Saunders.

Daughters Marva Walker and Sonia Stewart echoed similar sentiments, while noting the respect Richards holds for her mother for instilling all the positive values in not just her children, but also those she helped fostered.

"We just want to show her how much we love and appreciate her," said Walker.

'Auntie Mabel', as she is affectionately called, also served as a teacher of the then Jamaican Movement for the Advancement of Literacy programme.
