Even if you are in good health, having health insurance is important. It provides you with an affordable way to get medical care when you or your family members become ill.
With Scotia CritiCare, insurance coverage is provided in the event of diagnosis of any of the following critical illnesses: heart attack, stroke, cancer, major burns, paralysis, blindness, deafness, loss of speech or a coma.
If you are diagnosed with any of the listed critical illnesses, Scotia CritiCare can help you cope with the expenses and ensure you are able to concentrate on getting better. There is no medical examination required, and all Jamaicans from 18 to 60 are eligible for Scotia CritiCare.
You can choose from coverage amounts ranging from J$750,000 to J$4,000,000, which will be payable upon first diagnosis of the covered illnesses.
According to Lana Forbes, director of sales and service at Scotia Insurance, the insurance policy is also flexible, allowing persons to use the funds covered under the insurance for other purposes.
"Sometimes persons do not need the money for the illness itself, but to pay for other expenses that may arise as a result of the illness. Perhaps to pay bills or to supplement for loss of income," Forbes said.
An optional accidental death and dismemberment benefit is also available at the time you enrol for coverage. This benefit includes accidental death benefit that pays 100 per cent of the sum insured minus any applicable benefits previously paid for accidental dismemberment.
Accidental dismemberment benefit includes loss of a hand, foot, or sight in one eye, which would see the insurance paying out 50 per cent of sum insured; loss of two or more of the aforementioned which would see the insurance company paying out 100 per cent of the sum insured; loss of thumb or index finger, 20 per cent of sum insured and loss of thumb and index finger, 25 per cent of sum insured.
According to Forbes, premiums are based on your age at your last birthday, as of the policy date, as well as your gender, and you can even choose the frequency of your premium payments. The plan expires on the later of the policy anniversary after the insured 75th birthday, or the 20th anniversary of the policy.
Once you have purchased this coverage, you will have the opportunity to examine the policy contract and, if you are not satisfied for any reason, just notify the company in writing within 10 days of the policy date that you do not want this insurance, and any premiums paid will be refunded without interest.
To help you take your mind off money worries and focus on getting better, critical illness coverage can pay off your mortgage should you be diagnosed with a covered illness such as heart attack, stroke or cancer.
Whether you can work or not, critical illness coverage can cover your mortgage balance up to a maximum of $500,000. With this living benefit, you can maintain your lifestyle, protect the credit rating you worked so hard to build, and focus on your recovery.
