With tears streaming down her face, Miss D'Marie Institute, Davina Bennett, had her life changed forever as she was crowned Miss Universe Jamaica 2017 last Saturday night at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel.

The 18 finalists who were judged on their stage presence, confidence, grace and beauty, worked to prove to the judges that they were the right queen to represent the country on the international stage.

After a carnival-inspired opening number, the contestants hit the runway in Uzuri International's all white line, Angel's Heart.

Fashion out of the way, it was time to announce the top 10 who won over the judges in the pre-judging stages. Moving forward to the evening wear segment of the competition were Adrianna Bryan, Tanisha Weir, Andrea Myers, Jheri Graham, Sara-Jade Kow, Kamara Daley, Davina Bennett, Jodiann Harper, Jennae Jackson, and Jessica Wong, who won the Gleaner Online Public Vote.

The evening gowns, designed by Dermoth Williams Couture (Uzuri International), captivated the audience and gave the women the oomph they needed to end the night.

In no time, 10 was reduced to five: Adrianna Bryan, Sara-Jade Kow, Davina Bennett, Jennae Jackson, and Jodiann Harper, who moved on to the nerve-wracking question-and-answer segment of the competition. All gave their best answers to woo the judges, but only one could be crowned Miss Jamaica Universe 2017.

While many came out to support their favourite, their was a huge round of applause from the audience as 21-year-old Bennett was crowned queen, leaving Jackson in second place and Kow in third. This completed the royal trio.

Sectional prize winners included the Gleaner Online Social Media award, which went to Davina Bennett and Sara-Jade Kow; Miss Congeniality was awarded to Addairre Esmie; Runway Star and Altruism awards were captured by Davina Bennett; Best in Swimwear went to Kow; Jennae Jackson received the Essence of Style award; Andrea Myers walked away with the Most Photogenic award; while Kamara Daley prevailed as the Best in Evening Gown.

Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams were very satisfied with the night.

"It's hard to manage the pageantry and Uzuri International, and we have had sleepless nights but, it's our love and drive for it that keeps us going. Our love for country comes before everything else, and we really want to see Jamaica up there being crowned Miss Universe," McDermoth expressed, as the work continues with getting Bennett ready for the international competition that takes place in November.
