KINGSTON:

This year, in honour of its 10th anniversary and in keeping with its commitment to building awareness around special needs, the Digicel Foundation is seeking 10,000 Jamaicans to participate in its annual 5K Run/Walk.

Registration opens today for the event, which is set to take place on Saturday, October 11.

In addition to online registration at www.runningeventsja.com, participants can now register via the Digicel Foundation 5K mobile app by downloading it from the Google play store. The first-ever 5K app launched in Jamaica will allow participants to register at a discounted cost of $1000.

Participants who register on or before August 31 via the app will also be afforded the special rate of $1000. Registration will close on September 12, or as soon as the maximum capacity is reached.

Funds raised through this year's event will be distributed through our 'Showcase Your SUPERabilities' programme, geared towards providing scholarships to students with special needs.

In 2013, these funds benefitted students at the following organisations: NAZ Children's Centre, the STEP Centre, Mustard Seed Communities, Liberty Academy, Early Stimulation Plus, the Jamaica Association on Intellectual Disabilities, Jamaica Autism Support Association, Jamaica Association for the Blind, Jamaica Association for the Deaf and the Jamaica Down's Syndrome Foundation.

added to $100m

Funds raised through the 5K will be added to the over $100 million already invested by the foundation in the special needs sector.

The race will begin at 7 p.m. at the Digicel headquarters on the downtown waterfront and presentation of prizes will follow immediately after the race. Race times will be available on runningeventsja.com and the Digicel Foundation 5K app.

This year, sponsors include RJR Communications Group, CVM, IRIE/ZIP, KLAS, Catherine's Peak, Caribbean Producers Limited, Jamaica Producers Group, Express Fitness, SportsMax, Guardsman, Kingston and St Andrew Corporation, Urban Development Corporation and Island Grill.
