ATHLETICS: Spencer, Williams-Mills to recieve Diamond League titles today
Jamaicans Kalise Spencer and Novlene Williams-Mills are among the athletes who will be crowned Diamond League winners on Friday when Brussels host the second of two finals for the 2014 series.
Of the 16 events, the Diamond Race champions have already been decided in eight of them, but the IAAF said athletes must compete in their discipline in Brussels to secure the US$40,000 bonus and the Diamond Race trophy.
Spencer won the women’s 400-metre hurdles Diamond League title following victories in Eugene, Rome, Oslo, Monaco and Birmingham.
She enters Brussels with 22 points, 16 clear of second place Kemi Adekoya of Bahrain.
Williams-Mills took the women’s 400-metre Diamond League title with victories in Shanghai, Eugene, Oslo and Stockholm. She finished third in Paris and London.
Williams-Mills has so far complied 18 points, 10 clear of second place American Sanya Richards-Ross.
The other athletes who have secured Diamond League titles going into Brussels are sprint hurdler Pascal Martinot-Lagarde, steeplechaser Jairus Birech, 800-metre runner Eunice Sum, pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie, triple jumper Caterine Ibarguen and shot putter Valerie Adams.
The Diamond Race for the eight other disciplines will be decided in Brussels on Friday.
