McMurring tops canoe tourney

PORT ANTONIO, Portland:Angler Hubert McMurring landed a 270lb marlin to top the Stones Ginger Wine-sponsored canoe tournament in Port Antonio on Wednesday.

The tournament was followed by a prize-giving and award ceremony at the old marina in Port Antonio. Forty-two small boats competed for cash prizes, gift vouchers, trophies, and the Stone Ginger Wine trophy.

McMurring received the Stones Ginger Wine trophy and a cash prize, while another angler, Patrick Palmer, claimed the second prize with a landed marlin weighing 90 lbs.

One of the high points of the prize-giving and awards ceremony was a specially arranged cook-off among schools and restaurants in Portland where they each prepared a meal comprising of the Lion fish, which has quickly become one of the most sought after fish for consumption in Portland.

Cliff Hanger Restaurant Bar and Grill walked away with the first prize and a cash award. The College of Agriculture Science and Education (CASE) won first prize among the competing schools. CASE received a brand new 30-inch gas stove donated by Singer furniture and appliance store.

The 51st staging of the Port Antonio Blue Marlin tournament climaxed last night with a prize-giving ceremony and farewell party.
