Taylor back to bolster Jamaica
Fast bowler Jerome Taylor is hoping that his return to the Jamaica Franchise will bolster their chances of beating champions Barbados Pride in the second round of the WICB Four-day Professional League, starting today.
The showdown, one of three during the round, is set for the Windward Sports Club, Barbados.
“My return should help to strengthen the team’s bowling, and that is what I hope to do,” said Taylor, who last week missed Jamaica’s opener against the Windwards Volcanoes at Sabina Park due to personal reasons.
“I’m in good condition, and I’m fit and ready, and I’m looking forward to bowling at the Barbadians, who generally have some good players, and who will need to stop early.”
The Barbadians, currently third in the standings on eight points, will be led by opener Kraigg Brathwaite, who scored 182 in their drawn encounter away to Trinidad and Tobago Red Force last weekend.
He is expected to get strong support from West Indies batsmen Dwayne Smith, Ryan Hinds, and Jonathan Carter.
West Indian all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite and bowlers Jason Holder and Kemar Roach are also expected to feature prominently.
In addition to Taylor, Jamaica will be hoping that new fast bowling recruit Marquino Mindley, who claimed five wickets in his maiden first-class innings last week, will be able to show his mettle once more.
The same could also be said of leg-spinner Damion Jacobs, who claimed seven second-innings wickets to help Jamaica register a 13-run win the Windwards.
Jacobs is set to work in tandem with left-arm spinner Nikita Miller.
Long-standing captain Tamar Lambert, young Jermaine Blackwood, all-rounder David Bernard Jr, and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jr will carry the batting.
MORE TO ACCOMPLISH
“Beating the Windwards at home was good, but carrying from there will be equally important,” remarked Taylor.
“We therefore need to buckle down, assess the conditions as best as possible, and try to play our best cricket.”
Jamaica are currently second in the standings on 16 points, one behind Guyana Jaguars, who will host the Windwards.
The Leewards are set to host Trinidad in the round’s other match-up.
