Former Kingston College (KC) footballer Ovan Oakley was on the receiving end of the prestigious 2014 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Year award two weeks ago, courtesy of being second in goals scored, shots taken and points earned at Concordia College, New York, where the ace player is in his second year.
The award recognised the Jamaican's overall academic and sporting brilliance.
"One of my biggest achievements so far is winning Player of the Year," he noted. "I am happy to have earned it and make mommy proud."
That rating was boosted by an impressive goal haul of 18 and six assists from 17 games this season. The goals were the most by any player from the CACC region, which consists of 12 colleges.
Given Oakley's sublime performances, the 19-year-old is now ranked fifth on Concordia's all-time list of best players.
Prior to his move to Concordia, Oakley played on KC's 2009 Manning Cup football team, where he scored just five goals.
Now he has shot to the top of his game. Oakley's rank as a college player is seventh in the United States.
He has been named to the 2014 Capital One All District men's soccer team. He was also one of four top forwards selected for the prestigious Daktronics Eastern Region Award and named to the coSDIA Capital One 2014 Academic All-America men's soccer third team.
The player explained that his motivation to excel and defy the odds come from his mother, Marcia Watson, who resides here in Jamaica.
"I do everything for her (mother). I know she is very proud of me," stated Oakley, who helped the institution to a fourth-place ranking. Concordia received votes in the national poll for the first time since 1999 and reached the play-offs for the first time since 1996.
In the NCAA division two soccer competition, Oakley was ranked fifth on goals and points per game, and 10th and 17th overall in goals scored and points earned, respectively.
He hopes to play professional football after completing a degree in international business.
