Gold Cup meet on at Caymanas
The big Wassy Bike Gold Cup race meet is on at Caymanas Park tomorrow.
Industrial action by unionised staff at Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) appeared set to force the abandonment of the meet before an agreement was reached late yesterday between the track's management and workers represented by the Union of Technical and Supervisory Personnel (UTASP).
Workers represented by UTASP went on strike yesterday morning over what a source at CTL said were wages and the slow pace of a reclassification exercise.
A back-to-work agreement was reached during a marathon meeting between the UTASP general secretary St Patrice Ennis and worker delegates on the one hand and members of the CTL board including chairman Christopher Brown, deputy chairman Andrew Azar, director Patrick Smellie and the company's CEO, Cedric Stewart.
The agreement was arrived at between the parties at approximately 6.35 p.m. Details of this agreement were not available at press time, but upon the conclusion of the meeting, the racing office immediately went to work to provide the final programme for tomorrow's meet.
Twelve races, including the 43rd running of the Gold Cup over 1400 metres, are expected on tomorrow's card.
